Durable, Reliable, and Affordable

Review Date: October 22, 2009
Reviewer: Andrew J. Seegers,
After looking at many different packs from the big names (ie. Northface, Kelty, and Mountain Hardwear)and was astounded by the hundreds of dollars I would have to fork over...for a mere [...] bucks this pack offers all the durability, space, comfort, and reliability of the popular brands. The seperate compartment on the bottom for your sleeping bag is a nice feature, negating the need to strap it on. Also, with the built in rain fly saves you the extra money of buying it seperately. Probably what I like most about this pack is the comfort. The padded straps are easily adjusted to fit to any build and it sits on your hips comfortably eliminating that pesty cramp between your shoulder blades. I took this pack on a 40 mile (4 day) trip) through central PA on the Allegheny Front and I couldn't have been more pleased with its performance. For two days it poured rain and my pack stayed completely dry with the rain fly on. At night, it would pour even more and my pack was fine out in the vestibule of my tent, even though the ground was damp. My hydration system fit nicely inside and there's a gap to feed the hose through. There's plenty of extra straps and compartments to pack to your heart's content. Even pro backpackers should be happy with this pack. Swissgear is a a great brand...I have a tent by them too. It's truly a gem to have a brand that provides all the same features as the power hitters out there.
Great backpack for price point

Just to add to the other 2 reviews.

Myself I purchased this last year (2009) at Sam's Club for around $45 I believe & am very happy with it.

You can adjust the torso length between the hip & shoulder belts. Not sure of the entire range, but works for my 6'2" frame and I think I could make it small enough for my 10yr, just not sure if the hip belt would get small enough (have not tried as he has a smaller pack)

I had overloaded it on 1 occasion for a short distance hanging 2 heavy sleeping bags from the bottom. The shoulder straps did not loosen as can happen with heavy loads.

The hydration sleeve will hold a 3L bag just fine.

For those complaining that the zipper was installed in a way you can not operate it from the inside, I hope they looked at this as the zipper operates from the lower section (sleeping bag compartment), not from the inside of the main compartment.

HTH!
Overall good, but has a defect

Review Date: November 7, 2009
Reviewer: C. Kennedy,
The price was great compared to other bags of similar size and with similar amounts of pockets and features. Upon initial receipt this bag seems nice and sturdy. Overall I was impressed and pleased after my first inspection. No big deal, but the color is more green than I thought. It looked gray from the pictures. Again, not a big deal to me.

However, I finally noticed a defect. There is a flap of fabric that separates the lower sleeping bag compartment from the upper main compartment. It's supposed to zip around the inside of the bag to separate the two compartments or unzip to keep them together. However, the zipper on the flap is sewn on wrong in such a way that the zipper cannot be zipped. There's no way to separate the two compartments. Whether this is a deal-breaker or not I'm not sure yet, but it's definitely a defect. I've contacted the seller, Tormart/Amazon, to find out if it can be replaced by a non-defective bag. However, I'm suspicious that this defect was known and is why it was priced at $60. I'm afraid I may have to decide if I want to live with the defect. In any event, it's disappointing to receive a defective item. I'll update this with the resolution to the problem.

---
UPDATE: After contacting Amazon, they responded quickly with helpful and reasonable solutions to the problem. While they couldn't replace the bag with a non-defective one, they did offer me two options: (1) Keep the bag and receive a 35% refund or (2) Return the bag for a full refund. After concluding that the defect is a relatively minor one, I decided to keep it. I was very impressed with the quick solutions from Amazon and appreciate that they took responsibility for the problem. I am pretty excited about the bag - in spite of the flaw I think it will be great. Because of this resolution, I have changed my rating from 3 stars to 4 stars.

Handy in every situation

Review Date: February 4, 2009
Reviewer: J. Chhatwal, San Diego, CA
As a student and an avid outdoors person, I need a backpack for school and for my various camping/hiking trips. This backpack is just perfect for that..... it is like a one stop shop for everything you could possibly need when you're out of the house for hours at end. Plus it is very comfortable to have on the back for long periods of time. The best part - it comes with supplies such as food, water, compass, first aid kit etc.
must have!

Comes loaded with supplies to possibly keep you alive in a situation if you just add common sense. The backpack is of good quality and it has a myriad of compartments and for this I give it an A+. The rest of the goodies are a throw in. I custom fit my bag with help from other sites as the items contained are mere basic essentials. Great to have in your car and please note that the bag comes with a waterproof cover that you can slip over it to disguise it from those prying eyes. It was definitely a good buy and will buy another one.
