"Dane Cramer's Romancing the Trail: Six Days Atop Laurel Ridge is a thoroughly enjoyable read. Cramer's work is delicately woven and insightful. The recount of his thru-hike on the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail is reverent and funny, contemplative and entertaining. His tale and supporting factual information entices the reader to give the trail a try. I highly recommend this book for everyone: hikers, non-hikers, nature enthusiasts, armchair travelers, humor lovers and history buffs." - Denise Weaver, Library Director, Mary S. Biesecker Public Library.
Cramer's "attention to detail makes the reader visualize what it is like to actually backpack across the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. From the sights of the green canopy to the sounds of birds and voices of other hikers, you feel like you've actually walked along the trail with him. He includes history of the area along with today's topical trail information. He includes a few charming stories from his childhood that are sure to bring a smile to your face." - Brian Whipkey, Editor of the Daily American, Somerset, Pennsylvania |

Romancing the Trail

This book was a wonderful read. I actually smelled the smells, felt the summer heat draining me as I walked up steep grades, and could feel the water sloshing in my "waterproof" Gortex boots. I also appreciated Dane's insights on our Creator. This is not a book on Christianity, but a book written by a man who is Christian, with a faith that is so central to his life that any book he writes about his life experiences would be grossly incomplete if that aspect were lacking.

An Inspiring Read That Will Move You In More Ways Than One

Inspiring and thought-provoking, Romancing the Trail is not just a book about hiking the Laurel Mountain Trail. Rather, it is about truly absorbing the beauty, mystery, and details of the nature and history of the area in and among the Laurel Highlands.
With a dash of history sprinkled among his often humorous observations and encounters, Mr. Cramer brings you along on a thought-provoking walk in the woods of Western Pennsylvania. Written in a casual style, yet with a healthy dose of understated humility and enthusiasm, you will find yourself touched, enlightened, and inspired to take on a journey of your own (if not the Laurel Trail itself). |
A wonderful read

A book I did not want to put down. Mr. Cramer seamlessly blends his trek and encounters, along with history, stories of prior years, humor and Christianity.
I learned things about the area that I have never known (lived close by for many years). But the best part for me is I could see, smell and hear everything he described in such great detail. Due to health concerns, I could never hike this if I wanted to, but thanks to Dane, I did it through his eyes. It was beautiful!

| Having hiked this trail and many others, this was truly a fun way to sit indoors in January and dream about the summer to come. The feel of the trail under my feet, the smell of campfire in my clothes, Dane takes me to the summer woods even in the dead of winter. |
Good Read

| Like many avid hikers I have always used a thru hike as a metaphor on life. In this book, Dane weaves a lovely tapestry about the struggle and rewards of a week on the Laurel Highlands Trail in Southwest PA. A mix of history, theology and accounts of unlikely friends met along the way makes for a wonderful read. |
