ummm….Martin Backpackers produce about as much bass as a ukule…ukalee…oh, cripes…I give up!!!….ukulele(sp)…sssgghhhh. I mean how much bass can you get out of that small sound box? But they are a cool idea, though. And they are quite well made…but the most important part of a guitar in terms of intonation is their soundbox, and here the Backpacker falls far short. For just a little bit larger package, a Baby Taylor would be a “sound” choice.
But I am still going to get one, though (used), because I think they WOULD be great for traveling. Used, they are a pretty decent deal. And they ARE made at the Martin shop in Pennsylvania…just NOT in their custom shop, LOL!
Update: Got my used Martin Backpacker about 3 weeks ago. I am impressed with how well they are crafted. Solid spruce top with solid mahogany sides and back…no laminates anywhere! Also solid magogany neck and the fretboard is solid rosewood…about 1/4” thick. Nice Martin closed tuners. The sound is actually pretty good if played lightly w/ extra light strings. It certainly holds it own. It turns out it is made at Martin’s plant in Mexico…not their Penn plant….but VERY good deal !!!

intonation has not got anything to do with the soundbox,its the scale of the guitar with how accurately the bridge n saddle are placed,got to be exactly the same distance from nut to 12th as 12th to saddle,compensating for string thickness

Washburn rover travel guitar is the way to go. Sounds warmer and less tinny, I have elixir strings on mine.
