Minus 26º Minnesota Backpack Hammock Quest On The SHT
The trip ended being 2 night and 3 days of winter wonder. Every year I realize that when breaking trail in powdery snow that the going is slow especially when toting your goods into the woods. Kurt Papke was an excellent hiking partner … very strong and self-sufficient. I like that in a backpacker! The wind was whipping off of Egge Lake when we pulled in there at around 3:30 so we stealthed up in the woods away from the lake and got into the shelter of trees. Nice to have hammocks for that …

Naw … still got my buns! Liked your woodstove and hooch hut.
Hey … you need to strap those shoes on again, snow or not.
Thanks….
Got my land legs back…waiting on a big shipment from Tinny any day now. Will try to do a video of the gear when I get out for a hike with it.
Take care,
Bluefin
wow a mini atomic works in -26 f haha
One thing that I’ve found helpful in the sleeping bag on those really cold nights: two Nalgene bottles of hot water – one in an insulated cover, the other not. In the middle of the night when the first bottle is down to just body temp, pull the still-hot bottle from the cover and enjoy a few more hours of heat. In the morning, it really helps to drink some of that body-temp water while waiting for the stove to heat the rest of it up for breakfast.
i like ur song
A buddy of mine tried to winter camp in his H.H. but he tapped out after a couple hours at around 0F. Thanks for sharing how you do it, I’m learning a lot!
Great video, Woooooooo buddy!
Shug, we’re you doing an Ernest P Worrel impression on the hike there? LOL
Funny … not really. But I did and do get a chuckle out of Ernest.
What were the first pair of black gloves you showed near the end?
)
Hey …. they are called Possum Down Gloves and you can get them at Backpacking Light’s website. You will have goggle that…….
Thanks for the video. It’s uplifting on a Saturday morning to see someone that obviously takes a huge bite out of life. I went to college in Minneapolis and am from Northern Iowa and it is real chilly in the winter. Keep up the good work.
I took a bite of life and strangely it tasted like Spam!
Thankee for the kind words…..
That’s so cool Shug! I just bought some hennessy hammocks for my wife and I . Slept in them once…heaven! I actually can’t wait untill winter again! it’s my fav! 5/5*
No …. cold! LOL.
Enjoy the Hennessy …. they have a huge following.
Bring Winter!!!!
Ive never done any winter camping let alone in a hammock. I recently picked up a Blackbird and I plan on using it this winter. Nice vid 5/5*
Winter is the time to backpack …. if you are a crazy Irish feller.
you should really like the BB I hope. Thanks and here is to wonderful comfort in the cold and piney woods.
Very cool! I’ve done a few trips into the northern BWCA but never in the winter. Maybe someday I’ll get my courage up enough for that.
BWCA is terrific huh? Awesome in the winter. As long as you are confident and geared up warmly …. ggod to go.
Thanks!
Shug
Great video! Beautiful country!
These negative temperatures you mention, I shudder to ask, Celsius or Fahrenheit?
I like to go camping in the mid north and northern South Australia in winter, it’s usually quite pleasant, 20-25C, which is way better than the few times I’ve been in the northern Flinders Ranges in summer when it hit 40-48C one year, usually its high 30′s.
Glad am I! Yes, Fahrenheit…..
Would love to do me some Aussie Backpacking someday……
Was there in 1993 for only a short time on work related biz. Beautiful country and people.
