I got a swiss steel for Christmas and now I see this. Oh well, maybe next time.
By the way, what kind of stove was that? I get that it is a alcohol stove and probably home made, but can you post a link to instructions?
Very cool. I like it. Small, compact, but could get misplaced or lost easily like other small items.
It’s the same number as the licks you get from a Tootsie pop. : }
Somehow that makes sense…
Nice toy. I wouldn´t carry it out in the woods though . It looks too small, i don´t think you will be able to use it with thick gloves on or after ye old involuntary dip in cold water with your fingers going numb from the cold. The unscrewing and screwing back together again is a bad idea for a “survival” product, K.I.S = Keep It Simple. I´m sticking with my “light my fire” as a backup. My primary source of ignition are lighter and matches (i also carry a few hexamine fuel tablets).
Nice!!! Ok Im sold! Im going to look into this a bit more though. May I ask where you picked this up at? I might have to stop by REI today ust to see if they have it and whie Im there look for some other deals….It is not like anyone of us could walk into REI and not look around after finding the item we came in for LOL!
Wow, I am not paying that for a firesteel. You could just pack a pure ferro rod and use your knife to strike it.
Nice product. I’ll be up by Campmor this Tuesday. Gonna have to stop in and see if they stock them there.
Great review.
I got it at the exotac website. I don’t think REI has them.
@REXMARX003
It’s a standard pepsi style stove. Just Google it and you’ll get tons of directions.
Your right they do not have them! But I did come home with a Snowpeak 600 and 2 Life Is Good t-shirts!
Evil REI! Enjoy the 600. That’s my favorite pot!
How much more weight could you save by getting rid of that cap/handle. It doesn’t look like it is needed at all. Why keep it dry? If it wont work wet then it is worthless. Yes I know it will work wet just saying. As for the extra long comphy handle well do you really need it? I know you are all about light weight and you could save a few grams just by ditching the cap.
You could get rid of that stuff but I think the weight you would save wouldn’t be worth the compromise of ease of use. At that point you might as well just carry a rod. If tried that and they’re not easy to use at all. I think the 0.6 oz. weight is acceptable to me.
I noticed that the demo took place indoors in the warmth and out of the blowing wind rather than outdoors in the middle of Colorado’s winter with frigid, blowing wind. If one’s fingers are stiff and clumsy with the cold, can one reasonably expect to do all the unscrewing and screwing together to disassemble and assemble the Nanostriker? The larger, heavier striker seems to be more cold-finger friendly.
That aside, thank you most kindly for the well-presented and informative review.
Nice video!!
@otter46544 Dirt, dust, grime may get on the ferro. Why waste the time cleaning it? The handle is well compact so even if you do not need a long handle, you have the ease of use. The cap has a striker embedded in it, so why take away a few grams for more capabilities?
I think sandpaper will easily give a new, sharp edge on the striker.
Anyway, nice review and looks like an awesome ferro rod
@StrykingHawk
They recommend a knife sharpener but maybe that would work.
Of course it won’t be as easy to use with cold fingers as something simpler. But that’s not an issue for me. I use the steel as an absolute last resort. I carry that plus waterproof matches and a couple of mini Bics. First, use Bics. Then, waterproof matches. If I run out of all of those, then the steel. By then, I’m not likely to have lost the dexterity in my hands because the other methods will have already provided me with fire to stay warm with.
Nice product and review, really neat compact ferro. But I don’t think it would be very easy to use with gloves on though, and it looks easy to misplace the striker. just my 2 cents. keep up the good reviews. Thanks
personally, I’d like a bit more to hold onto for the striker
why go through the trouble of making the rod easy to grip if you can’t grip the striker? xD
I suppose a lanyard helps, but I’d still like something more solid
Jason,
It’s very nice of you to show us something cool that you have found. The Nanostriker may not be for everyone, but at least you took the time to show us.
Thanks. Keep the vids coming.
