During the Summer of 2007, I had the opportunity to backpack around Europe for 2 weeks. I talked about it often before I left. Why not? When I was young I had a steady boyfriend that went on a biking tour of Europe for 6 weeks. I missed him like crazy and he wrote me umpteen postcards but never did I feel like he ought to take me. It was expensive enough on his own.

Ok… Yes, your girlfriend did, in fact, go nuts, but here’s what I don’t understand. Was there no internet in Europe? No libraries with computers? No cybercafes or anything?
I’m quite the introvert, so I can absolutely understand getting away from it all, and not talking to anyone, with your girlfriend, it should be a different story.
You really ought to have checked in somehow during that two week period. Going to Europe should NOT mean ceasing all communication with your GF for the trip…
